Supervisors Agree to Meet in Cities

In an effort to be more accessible to the public, the county Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to hold several meetings this year in different cities.

Normally, the board meets Tuesday mornings at the Government Center in Ventura.

But Supervisor Frank Schillo, newly elected chairman of the panel, suggested holding a meeting in each one of the county’s five districts.

“It’s taking the government out to the people rather than having them come here,” said Schillo, who represents the east end of the county.

“We have a common gap with people living in the cities,” Supervisor John K. Flynn added.

“I don’t’ think they know what the county does for them, what they get out of the county. This brings attention to the fact that there is a county government and it performs certain functions for them.”

Supervisor Judy Mikels suggested that some of the meetings should be held at night to encourage attendance by those who work during the day.

The board’s meetings normally begin at 8:30 a.m.

Chief Administrative Officer Harry Hufford will research locations for the board to meet in the coming months.
