Marion Jones, who is skipping the indoor track season after winning five medals at the Sydney Olympics, will do on-the-field interviews during Channel 4’s telecast of the Powerade Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 11 at Staples Center.
Organizers of the meet and executives of KNBC-TV will announce today that Jones will conduct post-event interviews. She will work with sportscasters Fred Roggin and Carlos Del Valle and former high jumper Dwight Stones on the telecast, which will follow the NBA All-Star game.
Jones won gold in the 100 and 200 meters and the 1,600-meter relay, and bronze in the long jump and the 400-meter relay. She was a journalism-communications major at the University of North Carolina.
Meet organizers will also unveil the new, $860,000 track today. It can be configured as a 160-yard, banked track with four lanes, as it will be used at the Powerade competition, or as a 200-meter, banked track with six lanes. It will be set up in the 200-meter configuration at the Spruce Goose Dome in Long Beach for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships, Feb. 23-24.
Angela Williams of USC, who won the 50-meter dash at last week’s L.A. Invitational track meet at the Sports Arena in 6.17 seconds despite losing two spikes from a shoe just before her race, will compete in the Powerade meet. The two-time 100-meter champion hasn’t said whether she will compete in the open race or the collegiate race, where she can help earn points for the Trojans.
