Otani Makes Commitment With Trojans

Bobby Otani, a linebacker at St. Bonaventure High, has committed to USC.

The 6-foot-1, 218 pounder had 96 tackles for the Seraphs, who won the Southern Section Division XI championship.

Offensive lineman Vik Tiku of St. Bonaventure has committed to Dartmouth.

A 6-foot-4, 265-pounder, Tiku helped spring Lorenzo Booker for 3,103 yards and 45 touchdowns.

BASKETBALL

* Del Parker, a former Moorpark College men’s coach, is receiving a perpetual award named after him at halftime of the Raiders’ home game tonight against Ventura.

Parker was an assistant with the Raiders for 26 seasons and head coach for two seasons.

* Ventura center Desmond Penigar was selected men’s player of the week in the Western State Conference Northern Division.

Penigar, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, had 52 points and 15 rebounds against Oxnard. The points tied a school record.

* The Battle of the Valley senior all-star games, sponsored by the Valley Sports Foundation, will be played May 5 at Cal State Northridge.

The girls’ game will begin at 5 p.m., with the boys’ game at 7:30.

The event features the region’s top Southern Section players against the best from the City Section.

BASEBALL

* Pepperdine was picked to win the West Coast Conference title in a preseason coaches poll.

The Waves, who return 18 players, received seven first-place votes. Loyola Marymount received the other first-place vote.

* Bryan Gant, former Chatsworth outfielder, had four hits and Chris Martinez, former Chaminade infielder, had two hits Sunday to help Cal Poly San Luis Obispo upset Stanford, 6-5, in 12 innings in the opening game at Cal Poly’s new ballpark.

* The San Fernando Valley Baseball Umpires Assn. is holding a meeting for new members next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Monroe High.

Anyone interested in becoming an umpire for the high school season is invited.

* The City Section championship game has been set for June 5 at Dodger Stadium.

The Southern Section won’t be able to use Dodger Stadium as the site for its final because of a concert scheduled the weekend of June 2.
