Scheer on Clinton’s Record

Share

* Re “Despite the Cloud Over His Presidency, Clinton Excelled,” Commentary, Jan. 23: I cannot think when I have read a piece that exactly duplicates my own thoughts as Robert Scheer’s very clear evaluation of President Clinton’s achievements and troubles does. I agree that Clinton was the hardest-working and smartest of presidents. He cares for the needs of all the people, not just those acceptable to the upper classes. He worked to help solve sticky problems affecting humanity in other countries with the same compassion. I also agree that at no time in my long lifetime has a president been subject to so much abuse by the media as well as the opposition party. It is unconscionable!

* Scheer evidently does not read the same newspapers or see the same Clinton as the rest of the world. Yes, the media are biased in favor of the liberals. Take off those rose-colored glasses and look at Clinton as he is: pompous, conceited, with a constant need to be in the limelight. I will give him credit for being an excellent speaker and a politician who is reminiscent of the old-time politicians. That is hardly a worthy accomplishment and definitely not a compliment.

* The Clinton team did a lot of good during those eight years. While the Bush team occupies the White House, nations and peoples throughout the world will be seeking support, advice and assistance from former President Clinton, as they have from former President Carter. Because of Clinton’s experience, youth, energy, depth of knowledge and, now, his availability during this period of globalization and the Internet, in which communication is central, the additional good he will achieve will be outstanding.
