Ashcroft Nomination

Share

* The Republicans assert that the Democrats are holding up confirmation of John Ashcroft as attorney general to embarrass President Bush (Jan. 24). On the contrary: Given the results of the presidential election, it is imperative to hold Bush and Ashcroft accountable to the majority of the American people and their hard-won gains in civil rights. If there is any embarrassment here, Bush brought it on himself by sticking his thumb in the eye of mainstream America.

Ashcroft is qualified to be attorney general. Every person, whatever his or her political affiliation, has a right to his or her personal convictions. Ashcroft is anti-abortion and pro-life. That is his personal conviction. If this is his statement, should he be denied serving in a political position in the U.S.? If he was pro-abortion, would that qualify him? If so, why?

The laws of the land need to be enforced. That doesn’t mean that every political figure agrees with them.
