New System to Aid in Mapping Traffic
The Police Department plans to expand computer programs used to analyze traffic patterns by adding a state-of-the-art mapping system.
The City Council voted unanimously Monday to apply for a state grant to cover the $50,000 cost of “Intersection Magic,” which would include software, a personal computer, five Palm Pilots, installation and training.
It will be used to map collisions, citations and other traffic information so police can pinpoint high-collision areas and make safety improvements, officials said.
The software can compute the history of incidents at each intersection, types of collisions, and weather and lighting conditions. It is compatible with the Police Department’s other computer systems, officials said.
The hand-held Palm Pilot computers will save time by allowing officers to record information at the scene of accidents.
