Kuyumjian Wins, Leads USC to Title in Arizona

Alex Kuyumjian of Thousand Oaks won the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate golf tournament by two strokes on Tuesday and helped USC win the team title at Tucson, Ariz.

Kuyumjian, who played for College of the Canyons and Westlake High, finished at 68-67-71--206, seven under par, on the Raven at Sabino Springs course.

Michael Beard of Pepperdine shot 76-70-68--214 and tied for 15th as the Waves finished seventh.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Dominique Arnold, a volunteer assistant coach at Cal State Northridge, was ranked sixth in the world in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles for the 2000 season by Track & Field News magazine.

Arnold, 27, garnered his first top-10 world ranking after lowering his career best to 13.11 and running well on the European circuit.

Brandi Prieto, who capped her Northridge career with a runner-up finish in the women’s triple jump in the NCAA championships in June, is eighth in the U.S. rankings in that event.

Prieto set a Northridge record of 44-3 1/4 in the NCAA meet.

BASKETBALL

* Guards Devin Montgomery of Moorpark College and Song Cun of Valley were selected Western State Conference players of the week.

Montgomery was chosen in the Northern Division after scoring 52 points in two games. Cun was picked in the Southern Division after scoring 34 points in two games.

BOYS’ SOCCER

* Rio Mesa defender Chris Schwarze has committed to the University of San Francisco.
