A shrinking water supply and low commodity prices are forcing growers in the arid western San Joaquin Valley to lay off workers.
Officials in the Westlands Water District estimate that as many as 100,000 acres will lie fallow this year and that, as a result, 800 workers have been laid off or are working fewer hours.
