Chinese and Japanese officials have failed to resolve a thorny trade dispute, and neither side said when the next meeting would take place.

Hitoshi Tanaka, director general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry Economic Affairs Bureau, said the two sides agreed on the need not to let the dispute harm the “big framework” of deepening economic and trade ties.

The bilateral trading relationship is worth $70 billion a year and is growing.

Tanaka said talks over two days did not break the deadlock over Japan’s imposition of steep temporary duties on some Chinese farm goods in April and China’s punitive tariffs on Japanese vehicles, air conditioners and mobile phones in June.
