American Movie Classics tips its 10-gallon hat to Marion Michael Morrison, better known as John Wayne, whose role as the Ringo Kid in John Ford’s 1939 western classic “Stagecoach” transformed his career.

The cable channel’s ninth annual Film Preservation Festival will screen 35 of Wayne’s pictures, ranging from 1930’s “The Big Trail” (his first starring role) to 1969’s “True Grit,” in which he won his only Oscar.

AMC will open its four-day tribute tonight at 6 with an “Internet-enabled” auction of movie memorabilia. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Film Foundation, a group dedicated to the preservation of movies.
