A Handcrafted Tudor

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Upland Fire Chief John Scanlon and his wife, California Computer Schools CEO Gail Horton, spent a dozen years building their American dream in Upland. Now that they’re finished, they’ve decided to sell and start over. The couple want to downsize and already has started working on drawings for their retirement home.

About this house: Finding a large handcrafted Norman Tudor with the amenities of a newer mansion is rare in Upland. Scanlon and Horton knew they wouldn’t be able to locate an existing one, so they built one, never expecting it would take years. Even so, they found delight in the process. They kept at it, after work and during vacations, living on the property close to the construction.

Their focus on craftsmanship and care is clear, from the 3-inch-thick oak, arched entry door to the carved cabinet handles and 6-foot oak chandelier in the great room.
