Measure Self, Not Others

Re “Condit Miserably Fails 10 Commandments Test,” July 13: I don’t know how long it has been since I’ve seen the actual text of the Ten Commandments in print, rather than mere argumentative references to them. And although Steve Lopez is probably accurate in evaluating Rep. Gary Condit’s escalating troubles against that holy list, he misses the point, as do we all, when the list is used to expose the sins of another, rather than as a guide to self-examination. People of faith need to use the Ten Commandments to keep their own hearts in line with the divine, not to measure the failings of others. The hypocrisy of those who claim to stand for God yet walk differently will speak for itself.
