Astronauts Fix Crucial Space Station Problem
Two astronauts ventured out on a spacewalk to hook up air tanks on the international space station’s new entryway following a brief yet critical computer breakdown.
Space shuttle Atlantis astronauts Michael Gernhardt and James Reilly II got a late start on their second spacewalk of the mission because of the trouble.
It was reminiscent of a more severe problem that plagued space station Alpha during the last shuttle visit: an abrupt failure of a command-and-control computer drive.
Controllers reset the computer in time to install a set of air tanks on the new passageway. Lifting the tanks required a robot arm, thus the need for the computer.
