Three weeks after they sued the city and began working without a contract, Santa Paula police officers agreed this week to a package that includes an 11% salary hike over three years and increased retirement benefits, a negotiator said Wednesday.

City Council members will vote on the proposal at their regular meeting tonight, said Bill Davis, a negotiator for the Santa Paula Police Officers Assn. Negotiators on both sides expect the proposed contract to be approved, Davis said.

Under the terms of the proposal, 28 officers and 12 police staffers will receive 5% pay hikes retroactive to Jan. 1 and additional 3% increases in both 2002 and 2003, Davis said.

In exchange for the city’s agreeing to the proposal, the police union will drop its lawsuit, Davis said.
