Down Time: Because the week is usually so very hectic in my house--with my husband (composer-arranger Harold Wheel-er) working and my working and my daughter in school--the weekend is when we come together. Because we’re all so creative, I try to do things that nurture all of us. We try to do quiet things, things that take care of our spirits.

City Life: I love going to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. They have on weekends, particularly Friday nights, live music, usually jazz. We’ll go and have a little early, light supper at the museum and listen to music. Or beforehand, we’ll go see an exhibit. I really love Museum Row, so I just might stroll a little bit. Sometimes the buildings remind me a bit of New York, and I like to stroll along Wilshire. Then we come back home and get in the hot tub, turn the lights on outside and just kind of be, and finish winding down.

Bestsellers: Saturday, because I love books, I like to go to Eso Won, an African American bookstore on La Brea near Rodeo to browse. They never bother me, but whenever I have a question they are so knowledgeable. I’ll sometimes spend a whole afternoon there, or also go to Book Soup or Barnes & Noble.

Cafe Life: But one of my favorite places is Pinot Bistro, in Studio City. I really love that spot and we can indulge in our love of wine. Sometimes when I come back in the afternoon, I go over to Cafe Bizou. I like doing lunch there and you can just stay there for a long time.

Going North: I love to go to Santa Barbara and stroll down State Street and down to the wharf. Sometimes we stop in Ojai, where there’s a wonderful French restaurant, L’Auberge Restaurant Belge, off the main street. It’s great for Sunday brunch. I was there recently. I had cucumber soup and fruit crepes with lots of strawberries. And, of course, mimosas. For brunch you can sit outside on the patio looking at the mountains with jazz playing in the background.
