Re “Deal Makes Fox Strongest TV Group,” July 26: There are more ways than one in which to “own” a nation. A sure way is to keep the majority dumb, semi-happy and dependent upon your TV stations and newspapers for their opinions. When your main competition is a fellow member of the plutocracy, it can’t get better than that. In such an ideal atmosphere, if the Constitution gets in the way, just change it. Isn’t that what lawyer-politicians are for?

I wonder how many citizens are keen-minded enough to recognize that, with subtle little rule changes here and there favoring certain already-powerful groups, a once-proud democracy can become a de facto dictatorship, ruled by a shadow government.
