Backdoor Attack

Re “Lawmakers Reach Deal on Tax Relief,” May 26: As reported in your newspaper, Rep. Charles B. Rangel Jr. (D-N.Y.) commented relative to the Bush tax bill, “They call it a tax bill, but it is really a formula for depriving Social Security and Medicare of needed resources.” He is absolutely correct. The hidden agenda in the tax bill is a backdoor attack on Social Security and Medicare by reducing their surpluses. Opponents of those programs are too smart to attack them directly, so they want to be able to use the rationale of reduced surpluses to cut benefits. Those Democrats who voted for the tax bill have forsaken the basic Democratic Party principle of being the party of the little guy. Shame, shame!
