Jaime Benitez; Was Puerto Rico’s Delegate to Congress

Jaime Benitez, 65, who once served as Puerto Rico’s delegate to Congress, died of pneumonia Wednesday in a San Juan hospital.

Benitez was the island’s nonvoting member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1972 to 1976. He served as a U.S. delegate to UNESCO from 1948 to 1954.

Jaime Benitez--Friday’s obituary of Jaime Benitez, Puerto Rico’s onetime delegate to Congress, gave his age incorrectly. He was 92.

Born in Vieques, Puerto Rico, Benitez was educated in public schools in Puerto Rico and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Georgetown University and a second master’s at the University of Chicago. He spent most of his life in education, serving at the University of Puerto Rico for about 40 years. He was the school’s president from 1966 to 1972.

Benitez oversaw the establishment of the school of architecture, the medical sciences campus and new regional campuses, said Luis Agrait, spokesman for the Luis Munoz Marin Foundation, a Puerto Rican historical organization.
