Don’t Give It Away

It seems as though The Times lacks a policy about how much a reviewer should reveal to a reader about films, TV shows, etc.

Example: In the May 25 Calendar, two separate pieces ran concerning “Stage on Screen: Far East,” the PBS production of A.R. Gurney’s off-Broadway play. Steven Linan protected the subplot by referring to “a serviceman . . . whose work with top-secret documents gradually comes into play.” Susan King opts to lay it all out by writing “. . . who is blackmailed by his gay Japanese lover into stealing top-secret documents,” thereby leaving the reader to wonder about . . . nothing!

How about a little more respect for both the author and viewer and a little less of the columnist’s need for full disclosure.
