Amnesty Offered to Rebels Who Disarm

Hoping to end a three-month insurgency, Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski offered to grant amnesty to ethnic Albanian militants if they lay down their weapons.
The offer came as the fighting moved to Tetovo, Macedonia’s second-largest city, where the insurgency began in February. Eight rebels were killed in a clash with government troops outside Tetovo near the village of Lisec, army spokesman Col. Blagoja Markovski said.
In a sign that more violence could follow, police reimposed an overnight curfew in Tetovo and in the northern city of Kumanovo, another site of scattered fighting.
