Nationhood for Texas

Share

I believe that Jan Jarboe Russell may have hit upon something in reminding us that, prior to statehood, Texas was a sovereign nation (“Texans So Envy Shangri-La That Compassion Runs Dry,” Commentary, June 1). Why not offer them that opportunity again? As a separate nation, they would have no obligation to contribute to the public good of those in the union. They could join OPEC and charge any price they wanted for their oil and gas, not that anyone would notice a difference. And by seceding, their fragrant Houston Ship Channel would be forever free from criticism by the wild-eyed enviros at the Environmental Protection Agency. Who would miss them, anyway? When was the last time anyone was heard to talk about vacationing in Texas?
