Medfly Control Methods

Re “State Officials Cautiously Claim Victory Over Medfly,” June 6: Rachel Carson, author of “Silent Spring,” would no doubt be happy to see the success of biological pest-control programs, which she courageously fought for and wrote about passionately. I hope that programs like these will completely replace all of the insane and dangerous toxic-chemical assaults on our environment.

I would like to give thanks to all those involved in environmentally friendly pest control solutions by using a line from “Silent Spring.” Carson states, “Specialists representing various areas of the vast field of biology are contributing--entomologists, pathologists, geneticists, physiologists, biochemists, ecologists--all pouring their knowledge and their creative inspirations into the formation of a new science of biotic controls.”
