Truce Declared as Rebels Threaten to Shell Cities
The Macedonian government and ethnic Albanian insurgents declared a cease-fire after the rebels threatened to shell cities and army troops attacked rebel-held villages in the north.
Government advisor Nikola Dimitrov did not say how long the cease-fire would last but said it came at the urging of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. A statement from the rebels said they would hold their fire until 2 p.m. today.
The rebels threatened to strike the airport at Skopje, the capital, and other targets in or near cities unless the government halted assaults.
