Low-Flying Settlement

Re “Airlines Found Liable in Death of Asthmatic,” June 8: Pop go the champagne bottles! The lawyers for both American and British West Indies Airlines must be clinking their glasses and filling out the $170,000 check for Caroline Neischer’s survivors faster than a lost luggage form. Life surely is cheap when a court finds this woman’s earthly value to the community, family and friends, had she lived, worth less than $22,000 a year, or $550 for each of her 40 remaining grandchildren.

If this is American’s idea of “doing what we do best,” it can count on this frequent business traveler choosing friendlier skies.
