Securities and Exchange Commission member Paul R. Carey died at the age of 38 after a three-year battle with cancer. A Democrat, Carey was appointed by former President Clinton and confirmed by the Senate in October 1997. His term was to expire in June 2002.
Carey, who was a legislative liaison for President Clinton from 1993 to 1996, served most of his term at the SEC under Chairman Arthur Levitt, with whom he voted on nearly all rule proposals.
SEC acting Chairwoman Laura Unger, a Republican, and Commissioner Isaac Hunt, a Democrat, are the only commissioners left on the five-member agency. Republican lawyer Harvey Pitt, who has been nominated by President Bush to be the SEC’s chairman, is awaiting Senate confirmation.
