Blue Star Cruises to 10th Consecutive Victory

The Orange County Blue Star men’s soccer team won its 10th consecutive game Saturday, defeating the Central Coast Roadrunners, 3-0, in a Premier Development League game at Santa Ana Stadium.

Matt Taylor scored off an assist from Jeff Kovar in the 21st minute then Tom Poltl made it 2-0 eight minutes later by scoring off an assist from Sean Lockhart. Eric Mantrastelli scored the Blue Star’s third goal off an assist by Phil Hoffman in the 45th minute.

Josh Saunders had four saves for the Blue Star (10-3), which leads the Southwest Division.

FOOTBALL

Ron Yary, Lynn Swann, Jackie Slater and Jack Youngblood, who are to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, will be honored by local football boosters during ceremonies July 18 at the Sun Theatre in Anaheim.

The event is sponsored by the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the National Football League Alumni Assn. and the USC Football Alumni Club. Proceeds will go to charities. For ticket information, call Don Andersen at (714) 838-1053.

SPEEDWAY

Randy DiFrancesco of Bakersfield won both the four-lap scratch main and eight-lap handicap main Saturday night in front of 3,216 in the weekly speedway motorcycle program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Mike Faria of Reno was second in the scratch main, Gary Hicks of Corona finished third and Charles Ermolenko of Cypress was fourth.

SURFING

Vans Off the Wall Pro, the third stop on the PSTA Tour, takes place June 21-24 near the San Clemente pier. It will feature a one-star men’s World Qualifying Series event with a $10,000 purse, a PSTA-sanctioned women’s event and longboard event. Surfing takes place daily from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and finals will begin at noon on June 24.

RUNNING

Distance runner John Nelson of South Kitsap High in Port Orchard, Wash., has signed to compete in cross-country and track at Vanguard, Lion coach Bryan Wilkins announced. Nelson is expected to be Vanguard’s top 800-meter runner next season.

SOCCER

Ashleigh Jones has been hired as girls’ varsity soccer coach at Irvine High, Athletic Director Terry Henigan said.

Jones was an assistant under Larry Whitaker last season.
