Reduce Immigration

Re “Border Pact to Target Safety,” June 23: The people of the U.S. do not have any “shared responsibility” to make it easier for illegal immigrants to enter our country, as Jorge Castaneda suggests. Rather, we should make it a priority to reduce legal immigration to environmentally sustainable levels, which would be well below the 1-million-plus we currently allow to enter every year, and deport anyone who is here illegally. Granting amnesty, in-state tuition or driver’s licenses to these people not only rewards them for breaking our laws but encourages others to do the same.
