Hard Times for Atlanta’s Urban Parochial Schools
Black Roman Catholics in the Atlanta area have planned a symposium this fall to address dwindling support for urban parochial schools as the church expands into the suburbs.
The New Orleans-based group Sisters of the Holy Family, which has worked in black Catholic education in the South for 100 years, and the Diocese of Memphis are among those scheduled to discuss institutional quality, financial management and other issues.
The Archdiocese of Atlanta is creating the St. Peter Claver Regional School on the 50-acre campus of St. Peter and Paul in Decatur, seven miles outside Atlanta.
Students from two predominantly black schools in the city would be sent to the new school, which is scheduled to open for the 2002-03 academic year.
Parents of children in the urban areas have been working to preserve at least one of the schools.
