Lieberman Backs Bush Aid Plan

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) has endorsed President Bush’s plan to provide religious groups with federal funds to deliver social services.

Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate and the first Jew to run for that office on a major party ticket, said supporters must make the case that there is a proper place for faith in public life.

“Too often people assume faith-based initiatives inevitably mean entanglement, establishment and, at the worst, theocracy,” Lieberman said, speaking at the unveiling of the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. “Of course, that need not be the case.”
