* Re “Reviving a Savage Practice,” March 3: The anthropologically correct who bemoan the loss of native cultures must have found your story on the rebirth of Dayak headhunting very comforting. All the old ways aren’t dying, after all.

So, headhunting is a “savage practice” and a “barbaric custom” that we thought was safely relegated to the past more than 100 years ago. Meanwhile, back at the box office, Anthony Hopkins cuts open a man’s head and feeds him a slice of his own brain. “It’s only a movie,” Alfred Hitchcock once said. And Borneo is a savage, barbaric land, far, far away.
