Stampede Kills 35 at Hajj Pilgrimage
From Times Wire Reports
Thirty-five Muslims were crushed to death during the symbolic stoning-of-the-devil ritual at the annual hajj pilgrimage, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
The agency said 23 women and 12 men were killed and an unknown number of people injured in Mina, where pilgrims cast pebbles at three columns of stone that symbolize the devil.
“A stampede resulted when the older people in the crowd couldn’t move as fast as others,” said Saad bin Abdallah Tuwegry, a Saudi civil defense chief.
