L.A. Community College Board Approves Plan to Lease Bakery
The Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees unanimously approved a plan Wednesday to lease classroom space at the old Van de Kamp’s bakery site in Glassell Park.
The plans call for using the bakery property as a satellite campus for Los Angeles City College, accommodating as many as 1,000 students. The lease would cost the district an initial payment of $800,000, and about $1.5 million annually for 12 years.
The plan advances preservationists’ efforts to save the bakery’s 16th-century-style townhouse Dutch facade, which was scheduled for demolition.
The facade, at San Fernando Road and Fletcher Drive, is on a list of historic places recognized by the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission. The state has earmarked $3 million for development at the site.
