Tail-End Experience for a Snoop Used to Being in the Lead

A Drudge match? Conservative cyber-gossip Matt Drudge has moved from L.A. to some luxury digs near Miami Beach, where he has already felt the sting of one of his new neighbors--a man-of-war jellyfish. “I was skinny-dipping in the ocean one night,” he told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, “and one of those things got me on the behind.”

Small consolation, however for the stinging the Democrats believe they suffered in Florida in November.

GUIDE FOR ADVENTURESOME DINERS: Today’s selections (see accompanying) include:

* A Hard Rock Cafe with a modest budget in New Zealand (from Sarah Lifton of Culver City, who said the name was scrawled by American workers at an underground power station).

* A pizza chain that has renamed the town of Devore with a subconscious eating suggestion--or a bad misspelling (submitted by Jim Matthews of San Bernardino).

* A sign for “Hot Wings” accompanied by a likeness of the famous painting “The Scream.” And it’s appropriate, in a way, points out John J. Flynn. After all, the artist was Munch--Edvard Munch.

*

NAMES THAT FIT: John Scott of Sherman Oaks came across the case of Coors Brewing Co. vs. Stroh in the California Supreme Court.

“A suit between two beer makers?” he asked. “No. Jay Stroh is the director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The suit affirmed the department’s rule prohibiting sweepstakes.”

TARA, TARA, TARA: Alan Karpel writes that he and his wife have a collection of “Gone with the Wind” translations “from all the countries we have visited. . . . We traveled to Atlanta, hoping to see the Tara plantation. Much to our chagrin, in the ‘Road to Tara’ museum, there was the picture of Tara and its location was in the San Fernando Valley. Is the home still standing?”

My sources tell me that the Tara movie set was in Culver City. It was dismantled years ago and shipped to Atlanta but never reassembled.

I do believe, however, that E.T.’s earthly destination was a house in Tujunga.

ENGLISH LESSON: A West Covina reader said the sign that really caught his eye in England was “Newly Laid Eggs.” Then again, this reader’s name is Bob Bacon.

*

FUMBLE: That Oakland pro football team’s talk that it might want to move back to Southern California is obviously on people’s minds (if not on their nerves). I heard a radio reporter make a reference to “L.A. Raider, uh, Mayor Richard Riordan.”
