Most Americans Fail to Exercise Enough

American adults failed to change their “couch potato” habits over the last decade despite the publicized link between physical inactivity and heart disease, diabetes and cancer, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report.

From 1990 to 1998, only 25% of adults ages 18 and older met the federal government’s basic physical activity recommendations, according to a survey conducted by the Atlanta-based CDC.

Health officials recommend that adults perform at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, five days a week, or at least 20 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise three days a week.
