Job Cuts at Encyclopedia’s Web Unit

Britannica.com, the online version of the 232-year-old Encyclopaedia Britannica, said it dismissed 68 employees, or 31% of its U.S. online staff. The company said the move was part of a new strategy to concentrate on subscription-based services. Chicago-based Britannica.com employed 220 people before the cuts, which were the second in five months. Last November, the company trimmed 75 workers, or about 16% of its work force. The cuts announced Tuesday did not affect the online services’ overseas offices and came primarily in the feature and topical content areas.
