Regarding Charles Olken’s comment about wine drinkers “swearing henceforth to buy lesser Rhone and Spanish reds” (Tasting Notes, March 7): Well, EXCUUUUUUSE me. Some of us more enlightened consumers have not only enjoyed these wines, but actually have preferred them to the over-extracted oak bombs you call “California Cabernet.” We’ve even been known to “dumb down” to Italian reds in a weak moment or, God forbid, Chinon or Bourgueil.
