A 39-year-old Northern California man who drove to Cypress for a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl was arrested Saturday and accused of using the Internet to solicit sex with a minor.

Cypress detectives took Robert Michael Salzberg into custody at a fast-food restaurant where he expected to meet the girl and take her to a local motel, said Cypress Police Sgt. Gordon Re.

Police discovered Salzberg was soliciting sex from the girl when her mother brought detectives e-mails from him along with pornographic photos he had sent of himself, Re said.

Cypress Det. Ken Ramsey, who specializes in Internet crimes, continued the correspondence with Salzberg on behalf of the girl for nearly two months, police said.

Salzberg, believing he was still communicating with the girl, allegedly promised to buy her clothes and jewelry in return for sex. He set up a time to meet in Cypress, telling the girl that if anyone saw them together she should pretend he was her father, Re said.

On Friday, Salzberg drove to Anaheim and rented a motel. On Saturday, he arrived at the fast-food restaurant on Valley View Boulevard where he had allegedly arranged to meet the girl at noon, police said.

Salzberg was booked into the Cypress jail on suspicion of sending harmful material over the Internet, soliciting sex with a minor and attempted child molestation. He was held in lieu of $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
