Mischa Richter; New Yorker Cartoonist

Mischa Richter, 90, an artist best known for his cartoons for the New Yorker magazine. Born in Kharkov, Russia, Richter came to America with his family when he was 11. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the Boston Museum School and a master’s from Yale University. He worked as a WPA artist during the Depression and joined the New Yorker as a cartoonist in 1941. In one 1994 New Yorker cartoon, the characters Blind Justice, the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam walk into a bar advertising “Pursuit of Happiness Hour.” Richter’s work also appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Colliers and other magazines. He was twice honored by the National Cartoonist Society as cartoonist of the year. Richter was also a distinguished Abstract Expressionist painter. On Friday in New York of a heart attack.
