Pentagon Concedes Division’s Erosion
The Pentagon acknowledged that the combat readiness of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division has eroded significantly since it began peacekeeping duty in Bosnia last fall.
“It’s not a surprise,” said a Pentagon spokesman, Rear Adm. Craig Quigley. “We prepared and planned for this eventuality.”
Quigley commented in response to a report in the New York Times that said the 3rd Infantry Division’s wartime readiness was dropped to the second-lowest rating because the almost 4,000 division soldiers in Bosnia have been unavailable for training required to keep them combat-ready.
