Robert Osborne, on-air personality for Turner Classic Movies and a columnist for the Hollywood Reporter, hosts “A Centennial Tribute to Gary Cooper,” a gala featuring film clips from the actor’s career and personal appearances by his friends and peers, including actors Frances Dee, Joan Leslie, Karl Malden and Robert Stack, film critic Richard Schickel and Cooper’s daughter, Maria Cooper Janis. The tribute leads into the UCLA Film and Television Archive’s retrospective “Gary Cooper: Man of the West,” which begins Saturday with a double bill of “Morocco” and “Beau Geste” and continues through May 24.

In his previous group, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and in his current outlet Spearhead, singer-writer Michael Franti has been a provocative voice of the black experience, and a distinctive blender of old school and cutting edge. Franti & Spearhead play the House of Blues to preview their first album in three years. “Stay Human,” a work exploring issues surrounding the death penalty and due in stores May 15.

San Diego punk-rock veterans Rocket From the Crypt have done their time at a major label, and now they’re back in the indie world. Vagrant Records released “Group Sounds,” the band’s latest album and the first featuring new drummer Mario Rubalcaba.
