Union dining hall workers at Harvard University in Cambridge voted to authorize a strike amid a sit-in by students protesting wages paid to some campus employees, a union representative said.

Members of Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Local 26 voted unanimously to authorize a strike if their negotiating team does not reach an agreement with Harvard in contract talks. The union also called on Harvard not to penalize protesting students with academic sanctions.

About three dozen students are occupying the red brick building that houses the university president’s office. Their demands center on raising the wages of janitorial, maintenance and food services workers to $10.25 an hour and having Harvard pay for their health insurance.
