Everyone Was Happy to Encounter Hairston

Share

Thank you, Mr. Springer, for the beautiful tribute to Happy Hairston [May 2].

My wife and I met him at the Lakes at El Segundo golf practice facility. My wife was suffering with her short game, and Hap took the time to help her. I have been told by mutual acquaintances that this was typical of this gentle giant . . . help without condescension. What a contrast he was to many of today’s athletes. He will be missed.

Back in 1973, I had knee surgery at the age of 20, performed by the fabled Kerlan, Jobe and Carter team in Inglewood. Afterward, I was in therapy, sweating and straining and getting a little depressed while learning how to bring my leg back from surgery and six weeks of nonuse.

I looked up one day and saw this tall, smiling fellow walk over, sit down next to me and start to lift weights on his surgically repaired knee.

He started talking to me, asked me questions on how I got hurt, where I was from, assuring me that all my hard work would be well worth it. He didn’t introduce himself but he didn’t have to. The Lakers were still the greatest team on the planet and I was a huge fan and I was totally jazzed that Happy Hairston was sitting right next to me.

So long, Happy. Thanks for your help.
