Newport Beach Buys Ads Critical of El Toro Park
Criticism of an Irvine proposal for an urban park at the closed El Toro Marine base hit Orange County mailboxes and airwaves Monday, paid for by Newport Beach.
The advertising represents the first significant public spending in four years by supporters of an airport at the 4,700-acre base.
The brochure, mailed to homes countywide, suggests that the creation and maintenance of a park would mean higher taxes, despite assurances to the contrary by Irvine officials and other park supporters.
A cable TV ad delivers the same message by showing a bunny eating a flower that turns into a dollar bill.
