In the largest battle in the separatist republic of Chechnya in months, at least 15 Russian servicemen were killed in a two-day fight with rebels, an official in the Kremlin-backed Chechen administration said.
The fighting broke out Sunday when federal troops surrounded the town of Argun, about 10 miles east of the capital, Grozny, and tried to flush out rebels. Fifteen militants were killed and 10 were taken prisoner, the official said on condition of anonymity.
The Russian military later said 28 rebels were killed.
