8 Die in Rebel Attack on Soldiers in Kashmir
Two Islamic guerrillas set off explosives packed into an ice cream cart outside a paramilitary camp in Kashmir, killing themselves and six civilians, officials said.
Four members of India’s Border Security Force were also injured when suspected members of a Pakistan-based guerrilla group launched the attack on the force’s headquarters in the town of Magam, a Home Ministry official in New Delhi said on condition of anonymity. The area is about 16 miles north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state.
Several rockets were fired at the camp, then men in flowing traditional tunics wheeled the cart toward the base. The rebels tried to force their way inside, leading to a gun battle with the soldiers.
Seconds later, the explosives went off, killing the civilians and guerrillas, the official said.
