District Drops Plan to Convert Office to School
Los Angeles school officials said Thursday that they have dropped a plan to buy the headquarters of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and convert it into a high school.
An architectural review showed that the per-student cost of adapting the 80,000-square-foot building west of downtown would be about twice the average for a high school, officials said.
“It just didn’t make sense to do it,” said Supt. Roy Romer.
He said the district is exploring other options in the immediate area as part of the plan to find replacement seats for the abandoned Belmont Learning Complex.
