Allan Sloane; Writer of TV and Radio Drama Won Many Awards

Allan E. Sloane, 86, an award-winning writer of socially conscious dramas for television and radio, died on April 29 in New Canaan, Conn.

Sloane won three Emmys, six Peabody Awards, two Writer’s Guild Awards and critical acclaim for his scripts involving children with physical or mental handicaps.

Among his works were 1963’s “And James Was a Very Small Snail,” about a family adjusting to an emotionally disturbed child, and 1987’s “Kids Like These,” about a child with Down syndrome.

Sloane wrote scripts for “East Side, West Side,” a hard-edged CBS television series starring George C. Scott as a social worker in New York’s slums. The series lasted just the 1963 season.

After Army service during World War II, Sloane began his career in radio writing for the NBC program “Top Secret.”
