From Times Wire Reports

President Bush officially submitted to the Senate his nomination of John D. Negroponte as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Negroponte’s 37-year career has included tours as ambassador to Mexico and the Philippines and a spell at the Paris peace talks that brought an end to the Vietnam War. But his tenure as ambassador to Honduras in the 1980s has stirred controversy, with some critics accusing him of playing down abuses by that country’s military.

The Senate must now vote on whether to confirm the nomination.
