Sotheby’s to Preview Michelangelo Drawing

A pen and ink drawing by Michelangelo that slipped into obscurity 250 years ago but is now up for auction will go on view at Sotheby’s showroom in Beverly Hills Thursday and Friday.

The drawing, “Mourning Woman,” is a three-quarter length view of a woman shrouded in a cloak. It is thought to have been purchased in 1747 by Henry Howard IV, Earl of Carlisle, who probably didn’t know it was the work of Michelangelo but kept it with many other artworks at Castle Howard in Yorkshire, England. The drawing remained there until recently, when it was discovered in an album and identified as an early work by the Renaissance master.

“Mourning Woman” is expected to bring around $8.5 million to $11 million on July 11, when it will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s in London. The preview exhibition, at 9665 Wilshire Blvd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
