Step Up Enforcement

Re “Far From A Luxury,” editorial, May 15: A 5-year-old Toyota, or any other car worth about $7,000 or more, currently disqualifies most families from receiving food stamps? Not in my neighborhood. As a resident of Los Feliz since 1983, I can no longer stand to shop for groceries in my neighborhood and witness welfare fraud every time I go to the check stand. Time after time, I would see well-dressed customers purchase groceries with food stamps or WIC vouchers and then wheel their carts out to the parking lot and unload their goods into new sport-utility or other luxury vehicles. Instead of adjusting our current laws regarding public assistance, why not just step up enforcement? Until then, I’ll continue to purchase groceries in another neighborhood.
